Gastrointestinal Diseases Consultation

The Gastroenterologist is a doctor who specialises in Gastrointestinal diseases (G I) and Liver diseases. The common G I diseases are GERD, Peptic ulcer, Non Ulcer Dyspepsia ,Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel disease ( Idiopathic Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s disease), Celiac disease, Acute and Chronic Pancreatitis, Cancer of the Esophagus, stomach, Small and Large Intestine, Gall Bladder, Bile ducts and Pancreas. The common symptoms are heartburn, abdominal pain , gas,bloating, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting , blood in the stools, loss of appetite and weight.

The common liver diseases are Fatty liver, Hepatitis , Cirrhosis and Liver Cancer. The common causes of liver diseases are Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome (increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels increasing risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes) , Alcohol, viruses , autoimmune injury to liver, accumulation of Copper and Iron in the liver The common liver disease symptoms are loss of appetite, jaundice , fatigue, fluid in the abdominal cavity, swelling of feet, vomiting of blood, black tarry stools (due to blood mixed in stomach acid) and unconsciousness due to liver disease .

Overview

Acute Pancreatitis is the swelling or cell death of the Pancreas – presents as severe abdominal pain, fall in blood pressure, acute kidney failure, acute lung injury (breathlessness), vomiting of blood and blood in stools, collection of fluid in the abdominal cavity and /or , in the chest cavity. The most common cause of acute pancreatitis is gallstones. Chronic Pancreatitis (CP) is mostly caused by intake of alcohol or genetic mutations particularly in SPINK1, CFTR, CTRC, and CLDN2/MORC4 genes . The latter type of CP in India is seen in young patients with a better nutritional status. CP causes severe abdominal pain, weight loss, oily stools, high blood sugar, fluid in the abdominal cavity
